What flat strings would you recommend for D tuning for 4 strings?

Thanks!

I'd say Rotosound Monel Flatwound. The heaviest string guage is 50-110, that should give you a solid D.

Is it a fretless?

I used to have SIT Powerflats (ground rounds) on a G&L L2000 Tribute I owned. I could downtune all of the strings to DGCF and they were still tight. You might try them. Flats smoothness with a touch of rounds brightness.

Fender flats have a ton of tension and should let you tune down.

It's for a good old P-bass that I want to do some thumpin' with.

I'll have to check these SITs out.

I know the Jamersons and the Fender 9050's would probably have enough tension for a whole step down but they might be a bit too 'flat' sounding for me.

Are you tuning down a step on all strings to D, open D, or just Drop-D?

I used chromes for some Floyd tunes in drop D. The chromes worked great. I also tuned down 1/2 step with them and had no problems. I use the orange set, I think they are 105-50 but don't quote me on that.

I would suspect that they would handle going down to D since the E string was fine.

Yeah, i have a medium set, they're pretty tight with the exception of E string. Yesterday downtuned to DGCF and hooray - much more pleasant overall. Just gotta get used to it
