Flats on an EB-3?

Sign in to disble this ad
Let me preface this by saying I'm no expert on much of anything but I've always had the impression that an EB-3 was supposed to have a growly kind of sound to it. Seems to me that round wounds would be the way to go here. Right now I have a set of GHS Boomers on my Epi EB-3 but I'm more of a flat wound kind of guy. That said, flats seem counter intuitive to me. Am I wrong? Will flats still give me a good sound on a bass like this or should I just stick with rounds?

I've got two sets of Deep Talkin' LaBellas right now, one round (760RM), one flat (760FL). As I type this I realize these might not work anyways because this is a short scale bass.

To me the EB-series was made for flats. The growl is in the pickups...if it's a 6o's model, Newer EB-3 models have different pickups. My '64 EB-0 has Labella flats on it.

My SG wears LaBella 760FL strings and it growls like a sex panther.

I string all of my basses with rounds ...

But you can put flats on any bass.

I played an EB-O for years,
Flats work great on them (Big thud)
Also, GHS Pressure Wounds sound great. ( a little more treble tone)
