Question Flats for frettless Jazz Bass....

Sign in to disble this ad
I have serious GAS for a one so, what would you suggest? I want somthing as close to SwingBass 66 as possible. BTW, sould the low B string sound good on a frettless? I not, then what would be the biggest/best tenor flats?

Rotosound flats would sound close to their rounds, I think. RS flats are particularly bright (and metallic to my ears) sounding. My choice is LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats, but they've got a more smooth, round tone to them (after they settle in a bit). Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats are very nice too, but quite light in tension & gauge, unless they've changed them since I've owned any.

Swing Bass 66's are available in stainless steel or nickel wrap. Which do you have?

If you want a string for your fretless that sounds like a roundwound, look into some coated roundwounds (e.g., Rotosound Nexus) or some half-rounds, ground rounds, or pressure wounds. I have a set of coated roundwounds on a fretless and I like the feel and the sound a lot.
