Flats on Funk

Sign in to disble this ad
I understand the idea of a bright flat with a mellow tone on motown, jazzy, groove, but i was wondering if anyone hear uses flats, any brand on slap or finger funk. I am concerned about the slap though, because i hit my thumb on fingerboard for the thump of it, and then pull, off, but i am wondering if my thumb will get a gritty thump like the textured round i have now. I was thinking about getting Ddarrio Chrme Medium. Any suggestion or input is highly valued. Thanks

Try TI jazz flats. I am surprized at how bright they are. And I have heard that Sadowsky flats have a bright top. No personal experience though. What you will like with the TI flats is that the tension is more like a roundwound because there is a VERY small gap in the outer winding giving it more flexability than a typical flat.

+1 for TI's. They have the sound and feel that would work for fingerstyle funk perfectly.

i use flats for fingerstyle funk all the time.

your tone doesn't need to be bright for fingerstyle funk, it just needs to be funkin'

i use pyramid gold but mostly for finger style playing...

the G string is pop-able but slap sounds strange to me on flats and feels also strange...

I don't slap with flats but play older funk like Stevie Wonder's I Wish with flats. Fingerstyle funk sounds great with flats, but slap with flats..... not so good.

Try Play that Funky Music White Boy with flats and you will see what I mean.

I thought most flats were unresponsive.. I play funk LOTS... not loads of slappin tho'....some, but mainly fingers & sometime(as much as slap) a pick.

I got a set of LIGHT D'addario Chromes- 40-95 & I love 'em. sound good slapped IMHO & are nice & responsive & quite lively sounding.
