Flats getting brighter?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

Is it me or do flatwounds seem to be getting brighter. I have tried a number of different brands of flats and they have pretty much all been worlds away from "old school thump". I had my last trial in the world of flats a few days ago with ernie ball flats , they came back off on the same day, way too bright and garish sounding. I am using rotosound tapewounds now and am happy with their sound and have decided that I will be sticking with the tapes. Are bright sounding flats the new trend? What do you think?

Not necessarily, though in general a new version of a flat will be brighter to reflect modern tastes, I suppose. There are many established brands with the old style thump already (GHS, LaBella, Fender, Dean Markley, come to mind), while newer ones tend to be brighter (Chromes), growlier (Sadowskys), for example.

Then you have the odd situation where a new flat from a company known for its bright and growly strings comes up with an old style flat, namely DR. Look how those are flying off the shelves. Not.

New strings are bright.
It's true for flats too.
Leave them a week of so to settle in.

About the time you'd be thinking of changing a set of round wounds is when a set of flats is gonna be broken in. I play flats pretty much on everything and ALL the spare strings I carry are used and broken in. If you like the feel give 'em a week of daily playing before judging.
