Flats for Gibson SG RI (30.5" Scale)

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I just purchased a new Gibson SG Reissue Bass and need to put flat wounds on it, however I'm running into problems with most short scale strings listed as either 30" or 32" scale.

I would really like to put Pyramid Gold strings on it but their site said they are specifically made for the Hoefner Bass which is a 30" scale, also there is an article on their site that talks about using these strings on a Gibson 30.5" scale bass and having to cut off some silk in order for them to work. Is this a bad idea? Is anyone using Pyramid short scale flat wounds on their SG (EB0) bass?

Also, I was looking at Thomastik-Infeld jazz flatwounds but noticed that they are only available in 32" scale or longer. Would these be too long for the SG?

Just looking for some feedback or suggestions as I already made the mistake of buying short scale Rotosound trubass strings for my Hagstrom Swede bass when I really needed medium scale.

Thanks in advance!

GHS shortscale flats will fit that bass.

Rotosound RS77S short scale set - normal flats. The RS88 TruBass are great strings and come in many lengths, but not always the sound you need.

Thanks for the feedback.

From what I've found out the Pyramid's are long enough (about 33" from the ball to the end of the winding). The SG Bass is about 31.5" from the nut to where the ball sits.

However, now I have another general question. There isn't a lot of space from where the ball sits on on the bridge to the actual saddle. My concern is with the silk at the end of flat wounds. Does it matter if the silk wrap is on the saddle? If so can you just cut it off? I'm most concerned on the E string because the saddle is less than an inch from the ball end (see link).

BTW I do have a set of TruBass short scale strings and they are long enough, but after using them on my Hagstrom I am looking for something a little lighter and now I really would like to get Pyramids.

Got the Pyramids on my SG RI bass and they are working well. The silk winding on two strings is sitting on the saddle but it doesn't seem to alter the sound. This problem would go away if I had one of those after market extension bars I've seen made for the SG combo bridge.

These strings instantly feel and sound better than the stock round wound strings, but I have a bias for flats.
