Flats on a graphite neck?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm putting a Jazz bass together with a Moses neck, am planning on using flatwounds. What do flats do to the "graphite sound"?

I ask because I'm undecided on which pickups to use... if flats mellow out the sound of graphite, I'm thinking I can use EMG pickups (my favorite on jazz basses) and not get too much clanky treble. Right or wrong?

I use Chromes on my Modulus FB5. IME, flats behave in the same way on the wooden necks as they do the graphite. In other words, you get the sound that are typical of flats but you still have a certain "hi-fi" influence to it from the graphite. For me, it's a great combo of warmth and punch from the strings with a little brightness from the neck for some "zing."
