flats and half rounds on a stringray 5

I am considering getting some flats for my stingray.

How do you feel about the idea. I would be interested in youtube clips or songs i can download that have that stingray with flats sound.
I am also considering half rounds.
I guess the goal for me would be strings that last nearly forever. I cant afford strings very often. I currently use DR coated peacock blue strings. I have two sets which i trade off between and put in denatured alcohol when not in use. These two sets i have are nearly reaching the end after about a year.

I love the idea of flats and not changing strings very often or ever.
i tried cheap fender flats on my cheapo p bass copy and i couldnt get into the sound of it. I am hoping that with the active stingray and good quality strings that I might be sold.

any advice or links to songs or ideas opinions would be appreciated.

Flats die too but they take much longer. I would say avoid half rounds since I don't really think a good set exists on the market. A Ray sounds fine with flats and you'd have plenty of nice hot EQ in case you need a brighter tone anyway. I ran some Labella DTF's on a Ray a while back, sounded great. Hope this helps.

I tried D'Addario Half Rounds. Loved the concept, hated the strings. They grab your fingers so it's almost impossible to start a slide, but once you're moving they're really slick. I think it has to do with the edges of the ground off windings. It really screwed up my playing (I slide a lot). They did sound really cool though, kinda fat and smooth, somewhere between flats and rounds... then, they died in three days and sounded like muddy turds. Bad experience all around.
