Flats on an L-2500

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm leaning on getting a new G&L L-2500 fretless. I'd like to use flats on them to prevent board wear. Numerous searches give me conflicting results.

Are there flats that are able to be strung through body, or should I do the bridge mod, and string through bridge? I've also seen the B/E thru bridge and the others thru body. Any input from the G&L fanbase would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The B string is able to make the break over the saddle without problems? And do you use the 36"? Exactly which TI's do you use so I can swing by Just Strings and pick some up...

I have successfully strung a regular length (whatever that is) TI set through to body in the past. They had clearance past the nut and seem to be flexible enough to go over the bridge saddle without trouble. I used a 4 string set, but it looks like someone got the same results on a 5er. Should be fine.

I did the bridge mod on mine and strung through the bridge. The B string sounds fantastic! I love the TI flats.

A few guys over at BbL forum have done the mod to the bridge, and rave about the results- like a super big, clear focused B. Given the design of G&L's bridge, once the mod is done, you have acoustic coupling to the wood that rivals the whole 2Tek thing- without adding a whole pound of weight. And, the mod is reversible, tho I don't know why anyone would want to after hearing the result.

As for the original question, TI's will work through the back, as will Chromes. Now, as a suggestion, try DR SunBeams. IMO, the best string for fretless G&L's, after a great deal of experimenting on my ebony board L2000. Nice and warm, but with definition on the leading edge fo the note- you get all the fundamentals and overtones instantly, and still get a round but defined sound. After two years, there was a bit of ghosting on the ebony board, but no divots or grooves.

And, here's a kind of off-the-wall idea, Fender Tapewounds....smooth like glass, but still have some bite when you dig in. Flexible enough to go over the bridge, too. And relatively cheap!

I did the mod on mine. Its cheap and made a wonderful difference on my B string, although mine was great as it was. Go to the Basses by Leo Website, follow the instructions. I ordered the stuff from the companies the website recommended with no problems.

Also I played a G&L L-2500 fretless with DR Legend flats on it a while back and I thought it sounded great.

GHS Precision flats if you like an old school sound. And they're wound extra long so they accommodate STB bridges.
