I own three maple necked P-Basses and have flats on two of them.
One is my AmStd P which I've owned for about two years. It has an alder body. The flats sound wonderful. Of course, I'm a total fanatic about flats.
The other is my new Sting P-Bass. It has an ash body. I just got it this past Tuesday, put the flats on yesterday and will gig with it next weekend. So, other than some practice, which sounds real nice, I really can't say.
I use half-rounds on my Jazz bass, alder body, and AmDlx P, ash body. I tried flats on both of these and just did not care for the sound as much as my passive P. When I tried the half-rounds I liked the sound much better.
However, for a passive P, flats are only way to fly as far as I'm concerned.
Goodluck! Give 'em a try.
