Flats for medium scale 5 string

Sign in to disble this ad
I've strung my medium scale 5 string with some Sadowsky flats that I had lying around (x-long scale actually) ... all except for the B string. It shredded when it started to wind up on the tuning peg.
Is there a short/medium scale flatwound string for B?

I have GHS flats on my 33" scale 5 and they work fine.

The tuner is very close to the nut so the B string needs to be much shorter so that the thick winding won't break. Elixirs are the only string that I've tried that wind on without breaking.
Is there a way to shorten the string from the bridge end?

I wouldn't think so, unless you have your bass modded to string through the body or anchor the string further back.

You could contact a string maker for advice.

D'Addario makes a medium scale set of Chromes--email them about winding you a medium scale B. I have had really good luck getting string companies to help me.

Pyramid also has been very helpful for me--I emailed them, and within a day I had someone offer to wind me a string special length.
