Flats on my Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Quick question for y'all.

I have an MIA Jazz with the option of running the strings through the body. I am going to fit some flats (probably Chromes) in the near future. Am I better off top loading or going through the body with them?

TIA for any help

Soundwise, in my experience with doing it both ways on the same bass, it won't make a bit of difference. I didn't notice any difference in feel either. Some guys say that string through couples the string to the body better. Maybe, but I haven't noticed the difference in basses I've converted to string through.

One thing I do find makes a small improvement in sound is to have a steep downward angle where the string exits the bridge and sometimes string through makes this easier. But the difference is minute and in most cases inaudible as on most top load bridges you can get enough downward angle easily. Past a certain angle it won't make any difference.

You're set up to do it either way so why not try it for yourself?

I wasn't sure if the steeper angle caused by goung through the body would cause the flatwound part of the string to open up (if you see h=what I mean!), causing damage to or weakening the string
