Flats/Nylons on fender VB sig

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey All,

I'm thinking about making the jump from roundwounds to flats or even Nylons on my 4 string Fender Victor Bailey and am looking for some feedback/suggestions. I presently have been using light gauge Dean Markley SR2000s on most of my basses --I love the sustain, feel, brightness, and price of these strings-- but since going back to the VB I dont think that they are the right string for the natural voice and hot jazz p/u config of the VB, and im looking at a different sound.

I find that the VB is a darker but more mid present bass than a typical fender jazz. the SR2000s dont get the same attack or sizzle on the high end with the same light gauge feel as on my other basses and im looking to diversify my tone options.

I own a Rob Allen mouse and fell in love with the La Bella 760N series nylon tapewound strings on it, but dont know how they would sound and more importantly feel in comparing the30" to 34" scale jump. I am leaning towards trying these, but am wondering pros and cons for these.

TI flats are something else I have considered. I play almost exclusively finger style and descriptions here on TB of their "floppy" light feel sound closer to what I'm looking for.

What other string options should I be looking at? Anyone have a VB of their own and have a recommendation for accentuating the bass and not trying to make it something it is not?

I suppose no advice or suggestions is TB's way of telling me to suck it up, experiment, and trust my ear, but I figured I'd post my experience thusfar with the nylon tapewounds and perhaps even get some feed back.

The La Bella Tapes are great. Dark, woody, and suprisingly versatile as they are brighter and clearer overall than I even expected at 34". The Jazz configuration adds even more versatility and Im happy to say Im loving the tone I'm getting with only one problem...

The nylon wrap is insulating me from the grounding system and Im getting a terrible hum! Ive read a few post that list similar problems with a variety of seemingly silly solutions.

What options do i have??

Yeah pretty much. The only ones I have experience with are the TIs. The strings have a great, rich, super mellow sound. The tension was just too low for me to handle. They don't have a whole lot of attack.
