Flats question

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an 89 Fender Jazz and I want to put flats on it. I am concerned a little about the neck. A tech told me once that flats put 20-30lbs. more pressure on the neck and it is not a good idea for a bass with a smaller neck.

Any ideas?

If that was true there would be thousands of wrecked Jazz necks out there. Find a new tech and get the flats

I've got flats (Osborns) on all my basses. Most of which I haven't touched the truss rod on in 5-9 years.

Check tension charts...this is perfectly untrue.

If you are really concerned with neck stress, try the Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats. They are by far the lowest tension flats out there. I've had them on my '69 Precision and '74 Jazz. No problems.

Conversely, the Rotosound 77 Jazz flats will test the truss rod. There are lots of good posts on here about different string tensions. YMMV.

That might have been true in the old days. When flats gave way to round wounds in the 70's I think rounds were significantly lighter than the flats of the day. Now that there's some movement back to flats some manufacturers are making them lighter, I think. I also use Osborns (Lakland) and love them. I've also used and been happy with Chromes (D'Addario).

I'm loving the GHS Brite Flats on my Squier CV Jazz! No truss rod adjustment necessary.

+1 on TIs, Lakland JOs or D'Addario Chromes.
