Flats Question (follow up)

Sign in to disble this ad
I had posted a thread before about getting the D and G strings to be more thumpy and play like the E and A strings and got alot of info and thanks to all.
A follow up question I have is can you use different brands with different tensions without ruining the Bass? Saw on juststrings.com that they sold single strings and was thinking of making a mixed pair of different brands. When I called to ask some questions the guy told me it wasnt good to mix brands because the tension would be different on each string.
Is this so? Does anyone else do this?

You wont ruin your bass, but it may sound and play like ass. Different brands of strings have different sounds, and I cant see how it would be desirable to mix them up. Its never going to sound right.

You probably wont be able to hear the difference in gauge over small differences. And it can be useful to experiment with gauge, just dont take them too far out of whack with each other, or it wont feel right.

I never tried that on my electric bass, but I do it all the time on my DB. But for every good match, you find about 3-4 ones that sounds like crap.
