Flats for Salsa?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
I have a Moon 5 string jazz that I want to set up specifically for a Salsa sound.Right now it has 45 to 125 DR Fat Beams.
What I have in mind is the sound of an Electric upright.I was thinking Flats might be good for that, in combination with a piece of foam maybe?
There are so many types of flats and I have never used them and know nothing about the differences between them.
What should I get?

I'd go with chromes (a little bit of bite in 'em) with some medium density foam, like a bit of a fresh sponge or slightly less substantial

No,,,You don't want bite. What you want is that hollow mids thing with a pillowy thing.

Best version of this I heard was a Lakland Sheff with Lakland Flats.

I think TI flats might even be better.

So.. I think if you get the cash a set of Lipstick pickups might be good.

So I bought a set of DR stainless steel Flats for the Moon.I decided that I want to use my 5 string custom Jazz which has a 35" scale and I cut the strings too short so they barely fit.I'm worried they might pop off the tuners on a gig and because I can't wind them down to the headstock the open G especially rattles a bit. So stupid of me.But I can tell that the DRs are a bit on the bright side for me. I want to get the dark thumpy punchy mostly fundamental sound with very little sustain, that the real salsa guys get on their EUBs.I read that the Thomastic Infelds are great but they are also really expensive.
I'm hoping there is another less expensive choice.Would I be better off with nickels?
