Flats. String producers worst nightmare?

Sign in to disble this ad
Is the popularity of flats the string producers worst nightmare? After years of changing strings every week, many bass players now have the same set of flats on forever.

I don't flats are very populair at all, just on Talkbass. But yes, flats will last a lot longer than rounds so that would be bad for string producers

no, because im sure they are still selling plenty of fresh round wounds to guitarists.
And they normally charge way more for flats, over here in NZ they do anyway.

My Chromes only lasted about 8 months then the D broke right on the fret.

My flats developed little dents where the frets are, so they are not bombproof, no matter what the tale with Jamerson is!

I've used flats for years, never had them dent or break (chromes, fender and labella).

They are way harder to make than rounds - likely to sport a higher price based on that alone.

Rounds players don't change out strings every week - if they did you'd likely see prices drop. Economies of scale don'tcha know...

There also are flat users who like to change strings very often.
They're not really popular anyway. You have to seriously look around or shop online to find them.
And after a while, they catch a crappy intonation like all used strings.

Changing strings every week? I gig out on rounds three to four times a week on average and I change my strings twice, maybe three times, a year on average. You guys must blow WAY too much money on strings.

Or just leave the same set of rounds on your bass for years and they will go dead and sound just like the flats.

I've had the same set of TI Jazz Flats now for over ten years and they still intonate fine, they dont have dents from the frets and I wouldn't change them even if I was given a free set. And, yes, I am regularly gigging.
I have worked in the retail and wholesale music industry for about 17 years or so, and it's my observation that rounds outsell flats 10:1 or more.
