I finally (after 12 years) decided to try a set of La Bella 760FL's to replace my Thomastik JF344's. Thought I'd see what they're all about.
WOW!
Nice slightly tighter feel (easier to play on my right hand). Tone is thicker, less twangy. Looking forward to how these will sound in a week or two.
Many thanks to the folks who hyped these.
All in all..... I'm really digging these!! Big City Strings seems to have the best price on them as well. |

The LaBellas have more bottom and a thicker tone. This is the traditional P sound that we all know and love.
The TIs have a really mid-bass tone, no heavy bottom and no high end to speak of. The tone control has nearly no effect at all now, but the sound is SO PUNCHY with all EQ flat! At rehearsal last night my bandmates were really enjoying the sound, I have my first gig with the TIs Saturday night. The sound is like the ultimate recorded bass sound - clear and distinct, but not ringy, like rounds would give.
I'll know more after Saturday. Of course the ultimate test would be to swap the strings from one bass to the other.

I miss the Thomastiks.
So much drier and focused. That's not to say the La Bellas aren't great...... Just not a great match after all for my Tele Bass. |

They sounded so much like rounds to me and would never go dead. I'd rather play rounds when I want a roundwound sound.

Maybe you haven't given them long enough? I have a 4 year old set on my AC KBP5 and had a 6 year old set on my '69 Precision....both totally nail that sound and then some....I get that traditional flat lovers are thrown off by their tension but they definitely die and sound insanely wonderful! |

I want to try them too but am hesitant because I just can't do high-tension strings.
Same for the Pyramid Golds, alot say they're high-tension, alot say they're not.....so confusing...

Big fat sound...but sometimes it irritates my that my E string is so damn dead. No sustain whatsoever, when you need it. I would like to have strings like the Labellas with some sustain.

Tonally, though, they are completely different. I don't care for the lighter G & D, though... still a little too zingy. I've since put these on my G&L and my P is wearing the Jamerson set. I think I'm going to grab another set of Jamersons for the G&L as they just have THAT tone and tension that I need and love. I heart them. |

The Thomastiks didn't work for me on my Precision, but neither did the La Bellas. I ended up buying some Pyramid Flats and found the tone I was looking for.
For me, it seems like the Pyramids split the difference between the La Bella's and the Thomastiks, both in tone and string tension- more thump than the Thomastiks, a little brighter sounding up top than the La Bella's.
I haven't tried the Pyramids on the Telebass, but it's going to happen! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
