Flats on a thunderbird?

Sign in to disble this ad
Being somewhat old-fashioned about bass sounds, I'm curious what it would sound like to put flatwounds on my epiphone goth thunderbird. The Thunderbird seems like a bass that should always have rounds on it, being for "rock music" and such, but rounds are just too bright for me unless they're worn in. Does anyone use a thunderbird with flats? What does it sound like?

You can put flats on any bass guitar. Realise they're not all the same. Try Rotosound Monel Jazz Flats. They have a little grain to them. Or S.I.T. Power Flats, they are even more grainy.

Give half rounds a shot too.

They're supposed to be a mid ground between rounds and flats. Or at least thats what I have been told over the years.

I used GHS Bright Flats on mine for years, but those were really closer to rounds in tone. I used them to save my frets. I'll bet a true flat would have a nice heavy thud on a T Bird, but I've never known anyone to do it. Be a trendsetter!
