Flats VS Rounds - as played by Ed Friedland

Sign in to disble this ad
I checked out this new review youtube vid by the esteemed Ed Friedland. Although the purpose of the vid was to show off some genz benz gear, one thing I noticed is that it really highlighted the difference between flats and rounds. With a relatively transparent amp and the same lick, he goes through a whole lot of basses quickfire with different types of strings, and the difference between flats and rounds is as night and day.

So if anyone asks what the difference between flats and rounds is, refer them to this video!!!

Of course, the best way is to buy some flat, use them... buy some rounds, use them...

Very nice video and comparison.

It also shows (at the end) that there is no substitute for cone area!

You know, just having watched that, I have to say the OP was right on: This is a great video to get the idea of the difference between rounds and flats. Well done.

Obviously my intent was to show off the pure tone of the amp, but I guess there are side benefits to the method. Of course if I played the same bass with rounds and flats, you could REALLY hear the difference.

Great Vid Ed. I love my GB Shuttle Max 6.0 paired with a GB NeoX 212T. Ed, if you don't mind my asking, what is your 'go to' bass, and when do you use rounds vs. Flats?

I must say ed the comment at the end of your dimarzio model P video was rather hilarious.

I don't really have a "go to" bass. I pick based on the gig. Since I cover a lot of territory, it always changes. But I usually play flats when I'm doing country, blues, acoustic songwriter stuff, rootsy rock, etc. Rounds are for funk, jazz, aggressive rock, etc. Naturally I will break the "rules" every now and then. I'm not dogmatic about it, I just have general preferences. But I do play on flats most of the time these days.
