Flats w/ active pickups?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm thinking about trying some flats on my P/J Precision w/ active EMGs... is there any reason flats and active pickups won't play nicely together?

No reason at all.

There is a misconception about flats. Not all flats are the same as they were 40 years ago. There are some very bright flats and some that are more mid-voiced.

I use flats on my active Washburn 5 string. I can get a distinct clanky brightness to them using the active EQ, or a nice mellow tone out of them...and pretty much anything in between.

Some people feel flats just require one to boost the bass, turn the highs all the way off and play 'em like they are playing an upright. Or that flats only belong on a passive P-Bass. But with the variety of flats out there, there are so many tonal options available an active bass can take advantage of.
