Flats Winding Color

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys

I'd just like to know, what flat brands have what color windings on the ends or none at all? I'm using Chromes which I love actually but would like to explore other brands of flats. But I figure, while I look around I might as well find the kind that I think would look good on my bass. The Chromes have blue winding and I don't really like it. Thanks for the help guys I appreciate it.

You're picking strings based on the color of the windings instead of the sound, feel, or tension?

I'm asking a question that requires answer that aren't questions. But to answer yours, no.

I haven't used a ton of different brands, but my last set of Ernie Balls had no windings whatsoever, and my last set of GHS came with red windings. I too am currently using Chromes and the last 3 sets I bought all had blue windings.

How were the GHS compared to chromes?

From what I can tell, red and blue are most common, so unless you can coerce GHS or DR into winding custom colors for you, you might be SOL.

Don't mean to highjack your thread but do the D'Addario Chromes have different colored ball ends with blue wraps ?
(different colored end for each size string)

BTW, I have Thomastic Jazz Flats with red silk wraps on the end but another (unknown) brand with wraps only at the ball end.
I think they're also steel ends rather than brass. Could anyone identify them ?

Grab a Sharpie and make them any color you want. Or you can just peel the silk off.

Pretty sure these are the TI Jazz flats, also with brass ends.
Wondering about the ones with red wraps only on one end with the chrome/ steel ball. Anyone ?

I know that the RS 77s have red wraps. Very high tension though, I don't like them much.

How bad are the tension on Chromes compared to TI RS 77's and GHS?

I can't compare exactly, because I no longer use the RS77s, and I've never used the GHS strings, but the RS77s seemed to be VERY tense.

Hmm that doesn't sound good to me then. And neither do the GHS because they seem to ge groundwound? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyone know what color the windings are on the Ernie Ball 2806 Flat Wound Group III Bass Strings? From what guitarcenter.com tells me, they're lookin pretty good to me. Anyone have opinions on them?

You can remove the winding using a box cutter without damaging the string. It might be tedious, but if you really like chromes and don't like the blue, maybe it's something to consider. I cut off some of the blue stuff on the set that's currently on my precision, because it was sitting on the nut and seemed to make the string a little too wide to sit nicely. Of course, this might be a good opportunity to try other brands of flats (I can't comment on any other brands because chromes are the only flats I have experience with)
