Question Flatwound questions

I put a set of Sadowsky Flatwounds on my Jazz Bass earlier tonight. The feel is awesome and so is the note definition. It's like owning a brand new bass. I have a few questions, though.

The flats are higher in tension than the roundwounds I had on the bass previously (same gauges, 45-105). On a whim I tried tuning down to D. Feels good, but I'm curious if it's all right to keep the bass tuned down. Contrarily, will it harm the neck to have a tighter string on there? The bass is relatively new and its neck is quite slim.

The E-string is muted and thumpy, while the G is zingy and sounds closer to a roundwound. The A and D are the perfect compromise. I've read a lot about letting flats break in. Is it possible that the high string will mellow out after some use?
