flatwound set with a roundwound low B

Sign in to disble this ad
Does anyone use a flatwound set of 4 with a low B string from a different set, possibly (though not necessarily) a roundwound?

If so, what is your combination? Or what qualities (tone, tension, etc.) do you look for when you decide which low B string to match the set with?

I'm probably going to get some new super light Chromes but I can't get a single low B. However, I may also get a 5-string set of indetermined make, use that low B, and save the other 4 for another bass.

Any suggestion is much appreciated.

I did a lot of experimenting with all kinds of stings (it was a very
expensive experiment by the way). I found that I liked TI Jazz
flatwounds best on the high end for that mellow sound. It was kind of
like the McCartney sound and did not have as much of that nasally ring
(sometimes called zing). However, they sounded very dull on the E.
They lacked that classic old school P-bass growl which I wanted to keep.

After some more experimenting, I found that the Fender 8250
roundcore (taperwounds) E and A strings transition very nicely into the
TI Jazz A, D and G strings. I could have chosen either the Fender or the
TI string for A and it would sound almost identical.

So, I ended up with a Fender 8250 roundwound on the E and TI Jazz
flatwounds on the A, D and G.

I'm not sure how well this information extrapolates to a 5'er but
I hope it helps.

I think my setup sounds great -- especially through a 215.
This picture is a little outdated as I'm using the 215 with my
SVT3-PRO now. I needed the extra power.

That is one of my main concerns right now. At the price of ordering a string online plus shipping I could nearly get a set of something else. The price of a set of TI is about equally deterrent to me.

Your experiment indeed turns out very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

I do hope I can hear a few more ideas before I ask the music store to order a single for me and wait weeks for their next shipment.

Damn, you're absolutely right!

I'm going to order the single. I'm making 40-95 + 132 B.
