Are the flatwound strings good for rock ?

Psyche Rock, Ambiant Rock, post-punk, new wave, Heavy Metal (like black Sabbath), Hard Rock, ska (like the Specials) etc.

U can visite my lastfm profile to know what type of music I listen :

http://www.lastfm.fr/user/mojorizin69

So, do u think that flatwound strings will be good to play the music I love ?

If yes, what is the better brand for flatwound strings ? (poll)

PS : I have a Squier VM Jazz Bass with that !

thx and sorry for my bad english

Edit : what gauge I should get ?

I suggested La Bellas. I'm a fan of the La Bella 760FS set. La Bellas just have a "heft" to the sound that I don't hear with other brands.

I also like the new-ish Fender 9050CL set--it's a little brighter than the La Bellas.

Chromes...I like the Custom Light Set 40-100. Well balanced, plenty of lows and much zing if needed.

+1 One of my favorites! I've used the 50-105, 45-100, and now the 40-100 custom light set.

i dont like the Thomastik strings coz' of the ridiculous gauge, I like when the strings are well tight, stiff...
The Addario are like I want ? Are they polyvalent ?

flats

James jamerson with the funk brothers, watch the movie "standin in the shadows of mowtown" Duck Dunn with Booker T and the Blues Brothers and Freddie King "gettin ready world" .

Carl Radle with Derrick and the Dominoes. That is just a start list.
Probably nothing you mentioned.
So old school thump. That jason meldal johnson or jackson fella likes chromes though. Search on and correct me if you want to. This is somewhat tongue in cheek because there is about a months worth of reading on this subject here.

Not sure, but go with TI flats. IIRC I think (correct me if I'm wrong here) Geezer used them at one point. Even though I'm not too partial to their tone, other bassists have gotten great tones from them. I'd say shell out the $$$ for the "most magical" flats ever to grace a bass's neck and if they don't work out, sell them here to some funk-hungry soul and buy another set of flats with the cash.

An alternative are Ernie Ball flatwounds. They look, feel and sound similar to d'Addario Chromes. I use them because they come as singles. This saves me money for my BEAD tuned bass.
