My chromes cut like a knife on my Squier CV 60's P. Perhaps you need to add more mids on your setup? Each amp out there is radically different, but the 30 watt hartke may have trouble pumping out enough volume to compete in a full band rehearsal. I would add mids first and consider a more efficient amp before I start blaming the strings. They will blossom if you treat them correctly with the right amp and EQ settings.

As said, get a proper bass amp and you won't have to worry about the strings you use. In order compete with (even) a 30W Guitar tube amp and a loud drum you need at the minimum a 300W bass amp with a 15 or 4x10 cab. A 30W amp is only to practice at home. To be heard properly a bass amp need a lot of power.
Your question is the same as: "with my Geo Metro I can't keep up with my friend who drives a Ferrari, should change I the exhaust?"

Give Ernie Ball a try!
This guy ^ doesn't know Fender changed their flat formula when they brought string production back to the US last year. I was a Fender flat hater for the same reasons 10 years ago, but now I think they are the bee's knees. They are now super-similar chromes, but offer more gauge variety and they are a little lower tension.

Never tried EB, but I also don't fancy any string in their lineup.
