Flatwounds for ABG?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi!
Are there any flatwounds for ABG´s?
Seems to me like there´s only roundwounds out there. I´ve got a Olympia (Tacomas poor, but booming, cousin) ABG.

I really want a more mellow jazzy string sound. Maybe even nylon tapered flatwounds. But is it possible for an ABG?

Cheers!

Magnus

As long as the tension isn't too high or the string too fat to fit the nut, you can use any string you want. Flats and tapewound strings sound great on ABGs. Check this thread.

I've tried the LaBella nylon tapes and they sounded and felt great. I had some bridge rise / body warp when I had them on so I decided to take them off, the LaBella nylon tapes are relatively high tension (as are most flats). It's very possible that there's no problem and the slight body warp is normal for this bass. I don't know if the strings were to blame, but they are much larger than the specifications at Tacoma's web site states. I have a set of Fender Nylon Filament wound strings, they're ultra-low tension like rubber bands, I intend to try them on the bass one of these days. I'd recommend trying the Fender Nylon Filament strings, (becareful - not their nylon tapewound, they have two nylon forumlations).

I've used.
TI-flats
GHS Percision flats 90-45.

I've noticed that a lighter gauge strings.
Works better on a ABG.
Not sure why?

Yes many people use flats on fretted ABG. Lighter gauge is probably best, TI being known as the lowest tension flats available.

TI does stand for Thomastik-Infeld.

I use rotosound jazz flats rubbed in butter for my Michael Kelly Club Fretless 4. Awesome bass, awesome sound.

You should also use the search function. I had a thread with the exact same name about 2-3 months ago and it had a lot of helpful info.

They don't make flats specific for ABGs so you'll just have to make do with regular electric bass flats.

No reason except I have tried both on electric basses and just think the filamentwound would work better on an acoustic. They're much lower tension than the nylon tapewound strings.

[quote=Grinxen;4729260]Ok, thanks! But .. why not the tapewound?

Tapewound have slightly bigger gauge sets. 110-50.

Sometime they are harder to fit on ABG.

GHS Tapewounds are 105-45.
A little smaller gauge.

I've used GHS Flats gauge 90-40.
The fit ABG better than Tapewound strings.
