Flatwounds on a DJ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anybody try this? I know its not a common route to go with a DJ, but I'm finding more and more that I love the sound of flats, and I really love the feel of my DJ. Does anyone here use flats on their DJ?

I'm trying to figure out which ones to go with if I do. I'm not a thomastik jazz flats lover, but I was considering lakland JO flats, D'addario Chromes, Labella Deep talking flats, and DR flats.

Any ideas or opinions? Thanks

I use flats on ALL my basses.........P's, J's, Hollowbodies. Both my Jazz basses (Hwy. 1 Fender, Lakland JO4) also wear flats and I love how fat the tone is even when you dig in.

I use Daddario Medium Chromes, I prefer the higher tension and smoothness of these to other flats I have tried in the past (TI, Lakland, Labella, etc.). I also like how they are a bit brighter sounding and not as "thumpy" as some flats.

thanks Jr- I like the chromes too, and I'm familiar with them, as opposed to the others which I've never tried.

do you string the chromes through the body or through the bridge?

"DJ", I beleive is a Lakland Darryl Jones bass. And flats on a Jazz bass clone is fine. Until 1982 or so, Fender shipped all their basses with flats. And a particular stack-knob Jazz bass which got a set of new LaBella 760s around 1962 or so played on a LOT of well-know pop records made in LA. Things like "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" by Simon & Garfunkle, just about all of The Carpenters' stuff, "Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In" by The Fifth Dimension. etc. All played by Joe Osborn on his ancient Jazz bass (with the bridge PUP rolled all the way off all the time).

Go for it!
