Flatwounds on Ibanez GSR200

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone tried this? If so, any flatwound recommendations for this bass? (First time flatwound user btw)

I do finger-style and picks (no slap ironically lol.)
I play quite a bit of funk, blues, and r&b, but play a little modern rock here and there, so a mellow, solid foundation with a tiny bit of edge is ideal. I've been looking at Chromes, but worried they might have a little too much edge. GHS Precision Flats are another candiate, but I don't know if they'd cut through enough in the mix of a rock band.

Preferably cheaper price, but any suggestions will help!

Chromes are a bit bright for what you are describing IMHO... The P Flats will fit your description as well as budget from what it looks like...

GHS Precision Flats won't cut through the mix. They will punch through.

I just restrung my new Xavier with Precision Flats from Jason, and I love em.
I had chromes on my GSR200 when I bought it from GC and didnt like them, not enough range for a P/J bass, installed the GHS Pressurewounds and am TOTALLY satisfied!

The only flats my dealer had in stock were Precision Flats so I bought a set for my new (to me) SBMM Ray 34. I'll be stringing it up today. This is the first time in probably 12 years that I've used anything other than Chromes or Fender 9050's. I would have preferred the Fenders for this bass but I'm hoping Precision Flats will be ok. This will be my first "real" experience with a StingRay-styled instrument (I don't count a couple of weeks with a SUB 5'er).

Sounds like Precision Flats are the way to go then If I need a little more edge, I'll just start using a bit of distortion. Any other flatwound recommendations before I take the jump?

They don't make the same Fender 9050s you are used to (the new ones are basically Chromes IMO), so you're actually probably better off with the GHS P-flats.

I know that everyone says that they are the same as Chromes but I don't really like Chromes and I do like the new Fender 9050s.
