I have a '97 deluxe active Jazz that I bought off e-bay a couple years ago. It was also "too bright"
I just put on a set of D'Addario Chromes (45-100) flats and now it sounds like a bas should, great thump!

+1 on the Chromes.

When i first got my Fender Classic 60 Jazz, i try all sorts of strings like DR, Ernie Ball stainless steel or Nickel. But the bass still very bright.

Now i use chromes and it make the bass sound like a bass.

Very deep and warm low end and very clear high as well.
