Are Flatwounds Only For Metal? I play play stuff like Blink-182 mainly. I play a SVM P Bass with a pick. Will flats work well for that?

Do you want to sound just like Blink 182's bassist? If you do, then flats won't be what you are looking for. Try rounds.

They will work perfectly if you like the sound.

I don't want to sound exactly like him, my playing is widely influenced by him. Will they give too much growl? Will rounds work better?

How stupid do you have to be to play metal?

Im sorry but it seems that every body who plays metal has no idea of their own and need to do the same as everybody else who plays metal and have the best "pick anything" for metal!

Just try! If it works play it! If it doesnt dont!

I think rounds will give you more growl than flats. None better than the other. It's just different, man

It's really unnecessary (and unjustified) to make overbroad generalizations about intelligence based on one's musical taste. If you've got nothing to add, then don't.

Flats for metal? Two words: Steve Harris.

But most players would find flats too dark, especially as they wear in. Rounds tend to retain more highs over time, and will generally cut through a loud mix better. Harris uses a fresh set of flats every night.

Your bass, your amp, your EQ, and your technique will all affect how this works for you.

I use flatwounds for "metal" but I think you're confused about what "growl" is.

I think that's a misconception and actually backwards.

Flats are punchier and have a much stronger fundamental and cut through much better than rounds. All those rounds overtones are lost in the mix.

I think flats are better for just about any situation, hi-fi slap tone being one obvious exception.

YMMV

Flats can work in metal, but it will take some great EQing on your guitarists' part to cut through even a little bit.

Also, Blink 182 is not "metal" and flats would probably work just fine for it, but I'm not sure if the questions were directly related.

There seems to be a misunderstanding. I dont play metal. I play pop-punk. Are rounds or flats going to work better?

use coated if u want to sound more like blink 182 after that settings dont make much difference.

or u could get on youtube and type in ghs flatwounds. there is a vid of a guy playin all of ghs flats and u'll hear which ones u like.
