| | | | Flatwounds for P bass

I am going out of town to a music store tomorrow and figured I would get some flat wounds for my bass player. We have always been really hard rock but we have toned down to more of a classic rock lately. He uses a P bass with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder. We tune down 1/2 step. What would be a good brand for us to go with? Thanks! |

They're not the James Jamerson kind of strings but it sounds very good on my 78 P-Bass. |

| | | | Chromes are always a good bet. Although I'm using a set of Ernie Balls thats I'm very very happy with right now. |

The difference is La Bellas Deep talkin are more like the Motown R&B sound (good for rock as well) and the Chromes are brighter and slightly more aggressive in the mid-range. I had TI flats and they were all mid-range, but they would not be good for dropped tuning as the tension was already low in standard tuning. |

| | | | I have the La Bella flat on my P-bass and they give that classic THUMP! I think you're after a brighter sounding string. The Chromes or GHS Rotos should be a better match for you. |

I don't know where you'll be shopping, but my experience with stores and flats hasn't been encouraging. You might be in luck as Chromes seem to be one of the most commonly stocked flats.
I order mine online because of this, and to save a buck, too. Shipping strings is cheap and they are way cheaper online in general. |

I have them on a Jay Turser JTB-401 '53 P clone, and on a violin-bass I have the Labella Hofner Custom flats (basically the same string). Great sound from both. Labella makes a superb vintage-sounding string.

Any idea why not, and if it's true, what can folks recommend for a modern P with a string through bridge? | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
