Flatwounds with red silk on both ends?

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a lightly used 2003 MIM fretless jazz and it arrived with flatwounds that have red silk on both ends. They seem like light strings but have decent tension. What brand of strings could these be?

How could I be sure they are TI's and not Rotosounds? I'm reading that Roto's have red silks as well.

Does it bother you or they sounded so well that you want to recommend to TBers here???

Cheers...

Perhaps the OP would like to purchase another set? I don't see how your post is relevant to anything either.

OP, it sounds like TI flats as previously mentioned. TI's are not "floppy" as some would lead you to believe, but they are not "high tension" feeling either. Roto's IME are pretty tight feeling while the TI's (my personal favorite flat) have what I refer to as a "chewy" feeling. Others on the board have called it "supple."

They could also be Labellas, my Labellas have red silks.

Oh, and yeah, TI's aren't *that low* tension, just lower than most of the regular suspects, like Rotos, Fenders, Labellas, and the like.

TI's have red silk on both ends but Labellas do not. I am not sure about Rotosounds.

These are definitely not high tension but they're not floppy either. I have a set of 45 - 100 Chromes on my other bass and those have noticeably higher tension than the strings I'm talking about here. The red-end strings are smooth to the touch and the windings are right against each other, but they're quite flexible.

TI's, then?

I'm just curious what I got because I like them and want to get a set for my other bass.

Sounds very much like TI's, a dull grey, but shimmery when light hits them, apparencewise?

Roto's are very bright in colour, and you can kinda feel the winding on the low strings.

Kinda like the difference in colour between nickles and steels.

I'll take a better look at them for color. These are completely smooth on all the strings, unlike Rotos. I had a set of Rotosound Steve Harris flats and you could see and feel the gaps between the windings on the low strings. I'm also going to compare the strings size-wise to some other strings I've got, because I know TI's have weird gauges.

I just confirmed that these are TI's! The silk ends match TI's in color, and they've got that supple feel to them. The E-string matches another .100 string I've got, and the A-string matches another .070 string I've got.

Really nice to buy a mint used MIM Fender fretless Jazz for $420 only to find that it's strung up with a $60 set of strings! I'm going to have to get another set of TI's for my other bass!

Is there anywhere that has a list or chart of manufacturers and what their silk colors are?

I'm sure we could compile one. The only issue would be the number of string brands that come with no silk or the same color silk or different color silk within the brand.

Example: SIT's come with black silk on both ends and so do Fender 7250's. Fender 8250's come with gray silk, though. You get the idea.
