Flatwounds for rock?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I'm in a rock band that plays rock/pop kind of stuff. If anyone recognizes these bands our sound would be similar to Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, etc. I don't do any slapping or popping in this band, it's just usually pretty much straightfoward playing with fingers, occasionally a pick. I was wondering, should I just stick with my roundwounds or would some flatwounds sound just as good? I'm looking for a good, deep and fat tone... I'm about to order some strings and was just wondering if I could try out some flat's or if it'd be a waste of money to do for my style. Thanks for the help!

I play Contempary Christian Music some of it is pretty rocking. I use D'addario Chromes Flats 100-45's they do a fine job on my Fender Precision Bass. Good deep low end and plenty of Punch. I'm really happy with the Tone they deliever through my SWR combo amp. I can't see going back to roundwounds.....

Gah I hate the Harris bass tone...

I wa sjust talking to somebody at work the other day who's only been playng 6 months but already has decided that flats are better for what he plays. Black Sabbath was all I managed to coax outta him...

I used flats for a while, then I switched to rounds. I found that the flatwound, while a good sounding string playing solo, did not cut through like rounds in a loud band setting. When recording, they also became too boomy for me. I found that a nice dead set of steel strings sound great. Of course IMO. I am using a bass-heavy Ampeg setup. Different basses will also sound different.

Here's my old Fender Deluxe with flatwounds. What sounds good when your alone, doesn't sound as good with a full band.

Compromise. Use pressure wounds like DR Sunbeams or SIT Silencers. I love Silencers because they are smoother feeling and fatter sounding than rounds, but not as dead/thumpy as flats.

And Silencers aren't expensive.

Wow, I'm surprised no one thought of the 2 main flat rockers...

Noel Redding of Jimi Hendrix Experience
and of course...
John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin

You TB'rs ashame me...

Edit: And as far as I've heard, Flea's gotten into flats as well.

Does anybody know if there are strings that get close enough to that flatwound sound but aren't that stiff. I have had Fender flats for more than 6 months and can't play them for more than 10 minutes ....been switching back and forth to roundwounds.

Capt Chaos- that's another great thing about strings like DR Sunbeams. Nice flexible string. SIT Silencers are more flexible than comparable rounds too.

Fender Flats. Tight tension, but I believe that most Flats are.

TI Jazz Flats. I hear they are very loose.
