Flatwounds in Rock?

Sign in to disble this ad
Have there been rock bands where the bassist used flatwound strings? I would love to hear some and how well/bad it sits in the mix.

Yes many natural rock formations are thousands if not millions of years old.

Ever heard of Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath?

I guess you've never heard of Led Zeppelin. Or Black Sabbath. That's okay, it's not like they were that important to rock music or anything...

Oh wait...

Edit: Beaten to the punch again.

Oh, yeah. Sure have, I'll go check their stuff.

My query was due to never using a set of flatwounds myself, I had no idea how to determine which was a flatwound recording and which wasn't.

I'm sorry but it never occurred to me that people used flatwounds in rock, I've never had a chance to try them myself. I'm just used to the often-trebly overtones of bass players in modern rock...

No need to be sorry. Give the D'Addario Chromes a try, you'll not regret it.

I play lots of progressive rock, and I use roto flats.
They rock.

I got one thing to say - Steve Harris!

Iron Maiden's bassist, Steve Harris, is one of the greatest metal bass players and he used Flatwounds on his Fender Precision (alongside his style, he created that "machine gun" like bass sound).

Probably the majority of recorded rock in existence, from the time "rock" first evolved out of rock'n'roll to the present day, has been recorded with flatwounds on the bass guitar.

Even after 1970, a good number of rock bassists in well-known bands used flatwounds for many years. Still do.

Wow, yes! He's got an amazing tone for their style. Sounds so well in the mix!

Another question: Are there stainless steel or other 100%-non-nickel flatwounds in existence? Unfortunately, I'm allergic to nickel.
