Flatwounds on a schecter?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a schecter custom 4, w/ elixers . 18 volt w/ active eq. EMG's Its a nice tone but kind of honky, I'm always using only the neck pickup, & dialing out about 3/4 of the treble.
I'm thinking of putting on flatwounds ...
Has anyone tried this on this bass? Any suggestions?

I have never owned that model of bass so I cannot help you on that account. However, you may want to try it anyway (flats, that is). You will never know until YOU try them out, regardless what anyone else says or recommends. I wish you well on this endeavor, and have fun.

Not familiar with the bass, but I also don't like too much treble. I found putting flats on keeps me from having to fight the treble by using the neck pickup or using and extreme eq on my amp.

My previous bass (MM-style humbucker in bridge position, J in the neck, mahogany body, active EQ) didn't sound great with flats. So...
lowfrq, I think you should try first. Find a cheap set of flats (or better a used set). If it's closer to your idea of the perfect sound, try some other flats.

schecters (including mine) are honky sounding instruments, and the best solution would be new electronics, but trying flats would be a cheaper attempt...

The flats help out alot getting around that native EMG40hz honk.

I've got a Schecter Studio5 that's one of my two main basses. I had flats on it before I gutted it and put custom Kent Armstrong pickups in it and an Aguilar OBP-3. I felt the flats definitely helped the character of the bass (D'addario Chromes). Since doing the upgrades it has a different vibe and is much more versatile so I only had the Chromes on it a couple times off and on. Each time I liked the sound.

Now my main bass for this current project is a Schecter CV-5 with J/MM configuration and it's more appropriate for this project than the Humbucker Soapbar Studio5 is. I've had the same set of Chromes on this CV-5 and liked how they toned down everything on it also.

the EMGHZ pickups are junk, but the preamp doesnt help either... the treble knob on that thing is something I would prefer to call the "honky mids" knob, NOT treble.... the blend knob might as well be a switch, because it doesnt blend at all....
