flatwounds for six-string basses

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi- I am a six-stringer who prefers flats. I have used TI jazz flats and LaBella tapewraps. Neither of these is a perfect fit; the TIs have too little tension on my 34' TRB fretless, and the La bellas feel good, and have a nice fat warmth, but lack clarity.
Unfortunatley D'Addario does not make a 6-string set in the chrome flat line. I'd appreciate some opinions on other good options- it seems that the number of choices is pretty small.
many thanks

Can't speak for the quality (or tone) myself, but might be worth a shot, considering the price...

For my 6 (34" scale), I like La Bella Deep Talkin': http://bassguitarstrings.us/store/pr...cat=303&page=1

I had a little trouble finding the 6-string set (juststrings didn't seem to carry it), but the link above is where I got mine.

Just be careful (like with any string) to put enough windings on the tuning-peg to get good down-pressure on the nut. I didn't, and mine "rattle" a bit...

How about Thomastik-Infeld Nickel Flats.

http://www.juststrings.com/toi-jf346.html

Very good flats for a 6 (IMO,IME), However they are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.($77.41)

FYI, I think you'll find that Carvin's "flats" are made by La Bella, but are a bit cheaper than ones that actually say La Bella. Check-out http://www.carvin.com/ and give them a call. They'll be able to tell you if their bass-strings (flats) are still La Bella.

Yeah, Carvins are nice too, they simply come in a plastic bag "no frills", remind me a little bit of the Thomastik's.

Good call there Perucci

Although D'Addario doesn't have a six-string set for Chromes, they do make a high C: the CB032. Just order the single string along with the five-string set. That's what I have on my fretless 6 and I like them a lot.

This was a very helpful discussion. I wanted to replace the "rock sounding" roundwounds that came with my 6-string Ibanez SR506, with a more R&B sound. I bought the D'Addario Chromes and had them installed today. I like the sound and the reduced pressure on my fingers. I'll try some of the other suggestions next time.
