Found string - after about a year of searching - long post

First let me say that everything in this post is IMO and specific to one bass. I play classic, alternative and jam band style rock and alt country. I play through a LMIII and Aguilar/avatar cabs. Not many effects usually direct to amp. I play finger style and do not slap. Occasionally use pick, but only if I have to.

That bass is a custom build jazz bass with Villex soapbars and fully passive.
I have been looking for the right string for this bass for some time now, and went through several sets and wanted to post my conclusions.

Originally I was a daddario guy, nickels 105-45 - just always used those as they really did what I needed. But one day (after spending too much time on here reading) I decided to look into different types and brands.

First I went for all the hub bub about flats. I wanted the promised clarity in a band setting and all that was said about them. Went with chromes and actually really liked them - *when they were new*. I did not like the tone as they aged, there was no life as they were flats. Band never even noticed I put them on.
Next up: Sadowsky flats. Really liked these, but still no real life and band never noticed again. Starting to think flats are just not for me or this bass.
By this time, many months later, I decided to try out the Jonas Helborg DR string. Promised fundamentals and roundwound tone. I liked them really, but they did not cut in the band very well at all. They might be good for certain situations but did not work in my band setting.
Next up. Decided to try more DR. Low Riders both nickel and steel. 105-45 again. These were nice, but too much tension for me I think (even though I was used to the flats). Not bad though. Decided to keep trying.
Fatbeams 105-45. NOW - I really like this string. The flexibility and tension of this roundcore string was exactly what i was looking for. Easy on the hands and very responsive, and even across the board. Band noticed these, I sat nicely below the guitars and perfect with the kick (oddly everything that was promised with the flats). But, they are really bright, I had to roll way off on the tone as I like a more old school tone - with a touch of modern.
Next up: Fender 7250 100-40. Many great comments on these throughout the forums, great lows and subdued highs was mentioned and the lower gauge should put me with the Fatbeams for tension and flexibility. They did not impress me at all, the E was undefined and louder than the rest. G was a bit too powerful and twangy, and as such I really had to pay attention to my attack on each string. Was happy to take them off this bass.
Next up: Circle K strings balanced 106,80,61,46. Wow. This is it! Great flexibility and tension, even across the board, not too bright and wonderful lows. In fact, I can't tell there is any frequency area not equally represented here. I have never played a balanced set before, and it is just great. They have a packet in the shipment that said "Caution, using these strings can become addictive" or something like that. I agree. For this bass, my technique and music styles these are really really nice. Just wanted to share my little journey.

I believe they are the strings of John Turner, no? I've been thinking of getting a set.

Honestly, I am not sure who uses them. There was little info around about them. A few threads with positive comments, but you could really find that for many string sets - as so many are really good now days; so many choices. I will be honest, I was really hoping I would like the Fenders the most as their price is very affordable, but made in Mexico and I do like to support small US business when I can.

What's the composition of the Circle K's -- nickel, nickel plated, stainless?

From the web site:

Circle K Strings are a nickel/steel hybrid that are fully harmonically present. Not quite as bright as steels and not as 'scooped' as nickels, with a tonality that shifts less and lasts longer.

Another point on these - they seem less "wolfy" in the higher registers than many strings I have had.

Circle K are going to be the next string I try. Going for the .043-.136 balanced set. I am hoping will they be fatter on the D & G strings than the DR Nickel Lo-Riders I'm using now, my only complaint about them. The 35" scale of the Cirrus doesn't help either, but I'm hoping that the "balanced" Circle Ks will alleviate at least some of the problem.

"Wolfy"? - kinda hard to describe. Many strings to me once your get up around the 12 fret and higher on the E and A seem to sound kinda distorted - kinda loud and not as rich. IDK, hard to explain. Some basses seem to be more prone to it than others. The Fender 7250 I thought really exaggerated this more than the Fatbeams and certainly the Circle K.
DoubleAgent,, I found the Circle K to be very even in tone across the board, I am not saying they are the best things ever invented and will fix all problems, but they are very even in tone and playability. Typically, with other stings, my G is very loud and can be twangy, and my D can be very quiet on this 34".

I get the "wolfy" thing entirely, that bloated, sort of muddled sounding thing that happens on a fat string when fretted higher up the neck. I hate that! Might have to try a set of these bad boys!

Report back, I am curious if you find some of the same qualities or not. I have bought so many strings, and other equipment, based on reviews like this one where they did not sound anything like what was reported.

No through body stringing with CircleK strings. That leaves ferrels a chance to fall out...cant use them on the 08 Standard.

But...

When the Black Beauties die out on the Geddy Ill give these a shot.

FWIW I strung my P5 through the body on the non-tapered strings (G, D, and A) and through the bridge for the two fat ones for that reason. The next set, I will probably just string them all through the bridge. I am not convinced that I gain anything through the body when it has this heavier bridge. If the ferrels come loose...whatever.
