Fretless Fender Precision String Opinions

Sign in to disble this ad
I was lucky enough recently to acquire a 1975 Fretless Fender Precision with a maple neck. I play without a pick and use it for some songs in a band playing pop songs from the 1960's to present (newer Santana stuff, Pretenders, Steely Dan). I like a good growl on the vibrato and currently have Dean Markley Solid Bass Strings. Any advice on anything better? Thanks!

I have a 1996 version with a rosewood lined neck, so take that in consideration. I have used many different string types, gauges, and brands with mine. Some include:

Carvin 4 string roundwound sets (tapered ends, nickel, light).
GHS Precision flats (both lite and med. lite)
Fender light flats (older type)
Fender 9120 Tapewounds
D'Addario XLs, medium
Fender 7250 lights
GHS Brite Flats
GHS Pressurewounds
TI Jazz Flats extra long scale

I have used all with varying degrees of success. Granted it's mainly personal preference, but my favorite sets are TI's, GHS Pressurewounds, and GHS Precision Flats.
I used roundwounds at first, but two problems arose. They started making those little scratches in the fingerboard, and (believe it or not) the rounds gave it TOO much of a mwah sound, taking away from the punch too much. Yes, I did back up and played over the body, but the mwah was still prevalent.
I went through a flatwound period and used the GHS Brite Flats and Precision Flats for a while, and really enjoyed the percussive attack they gave. I sold the bass when I bought my Carvin 5 string fretless. A big mistake, yes.
Ten years later I see it hanging in a guitar center and happily bring it back home. (Identified it through some really peculiar markings on the back of the neck in the woodgrain and a small nick I put on it before below the pickguard). Since then I have use the Fender tapes, GHS Pressurewounds, and the TIs on it. The Pressurewounds and TIs are my fav sets for the bass. The TIs because that great sound they make, and the Pressurewounds because they have just enough mwah and still retain the mid to lower end percussive sound I like.
In case you are wondering, the Fender Flats stayed on for about 15 minutes before I replaced them with the Precision Flats. When I regained the bass two years ago it had another set of medium Fender flats on them, which stayed on it about 15 minutes after I got it home.

I congratulate you on your purchase, a really wise one in my opnion. Hope it gives you many years of playing pleasure.
