Fretless: flat vs round

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys! im kinda new here, and i didnt see a thread that quite answered the question i was looking at.

Right now i own
a Squier Bullet 4
ibby Sr505
just got a Douglas 5 string Fretless

Now, im mostly playing my fretless, for obvs reasons, but i have a dilemna.

I'd like to get good enough to have that bass as the mainstay (already in half of the groups im in, ive managed to transition, its been like.. 4 days ahah). But the tone question is bothering me.

I'd like for my fretless to be my main bass, which means it has to be versatile... And the more i think about it, the less Flatwound sound like a good idea :P I mean, the mwah would be great.. but not so much for some of my groups :P

Im in a pickle about what strings to put on my bass, and really as of yet i've never ventured past Roundwounds (GHR, Ernie ball, Elixirs.. yumm lol)

So Roundwounds (which i have ON the fretless right now, they came with it) seem to sound pretty okay, but im worried about the wear. And i think im capable of MORE mwah if i switch strings.

Flatwounds i think can get me that mwah no problem, and they'd be gentle on my bass, but My rock/prog/metal/blues w.e band .. i've always liked a more high mids/treble/growl tone there. That i dont htink i can really get with flatwounds :P if i can, tell me!

Now i know barely anything about DR's, Halfwounds, Groundwounds, etc. Can anyone think of a choice for me that will

A) Give me a versatile tone, so that i can get mwah if i want, and hopefully midsy ballsy growl as well

B) go easy on my fretboard

C) last a decent time

D) hopefully cost under 100 for a 5 string set :P (but im hoping for like.. 30-40 :P)

Thanks a bunch!
