fretless stingray strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a recently defretted OLP mm3 stingray copy that is in it's final stages. (I've put the old strings on it after defretting and it sounded freakin' awesome, but those strings are goin' on 4 years old and are the originals that came w/ the bass when I bought it!)

I've realized that I have no clue of what kind of strings are normally on fretless stingray's since they're not that popular (for lack of a better word).

I'm wondering what kind of strings I should get for it? Stay w/ rounds or go w/ flats? Any and all input is highly helpful, thanks!

most fretless owners go with flats because they'll have a smoother, more mellow sound and don't cause much (as much) wear on the fretboard. rounds would be a much brighter sound, which might fit whatever style of music your playing. much worse to the fretboard though. especially ss strings, from what I've heard about their hardness. if you go with round wounds, a softer metal (like nickel) would be much more forgiving. I think coated strings help too... or there's always tape wound or ground wound strings. I myself have no idea what would fit you/your style best, but hope this helped.

Ernie ball flats are what I use. They are initially pretty bright, but they mellow out nicely and the tension is good.

Thanks for the replies...

I would just go for the TI jazz flats, but this is gonna be my 5 stringer and my fretless "let's do something different" sound. I like having the 5 stringer around for when my guitarists plays drop tuned, so I'm wondering if their is possibly a good set of strings that can keep a decent rock tone, but still maintain that "mwah" that we all love from a fretless.
