G String broke, need some info

Sign in to disble this ad
Man it always feels weird to say G string.

Anyway I was tuning it and I had it in perfect tuning, just about. And then it popped off. Damn. It's cool because I don't play it and I don't need it for my bands audition tomorrow, but stilllllll!

So did that happen because the strings are old? I know they've been on for at least a year, if not more, but they sound pretty good still.

And it's going to cost me like 20 bucks to replace each string? My friend told me it would be 40 for my B. That's insane. I can't replace them right now. It costs like 15 bucks for a set of cheap guitar strings. We always get the low end (haha... i'm funny).

The stings were probably stretched out as far as they would go if they were a year plus old. But I would still check that there are no burrs on the bridge anywhere and that the nut is smooth. But like I said it's probably just time to re-string

Going rates for a pack of strings is $20 or $30

...not for each string.

Really...? Because the guy I was talking to plays bass and he said that the B string would cost 40, and the rest would all cost less going down. But each string would be around 20.

So um... man, I couldn't afford 100 bucks to replace 5 strings. That's a relief.

My "G-String" ( ) just broke last week. They were exactly 1 year old. I got a set of Rotosound Swingbass 66's for $50 AUD. Thats $38 American. It's kinda good they broke, they were filthy from so much playing, and now i have a new sound to mess around with.

Where are you located?

In the US, $100 is about what a set of upright strings costs.

Electrics start about $20. Depends where you are though.

What kind of bass? An upright/acoustic bass, an electric bass guitar...?

I've broken 2 strings in 14 years of playing. One was due to some old wires with aggressive picking near the bridge, the other was my first experience "tuning" by ear after I'd been playing for about 3 weeks. Tried to fix that one by masking tape, whoops.

I'm in Canada so it would cost a bit more than what it does for you guys in the US. It's an electric bass, not an upright.

I like my strings. I'm going to keep them for a while and replace them all together when I have to. I don't play the G.

Like you, I've never broken a string on an upright or electric bass in almost 40 years of playing. However, several years ago, my father broke a string (near the nut) on his upright during a jazz gig. The broken string lashed-out like a whip, and its broken end inflicted a nasty gash on the drummer's hand. Not a pretty sight

This happened to me for the first time in 10 years only last week.
It was with a brand new set of Rotosound 66 Swings too!

I was had just put it on, was tuning up & it snapped.
I was using a tuner & hadn't reached G let alone gone over it. I wasn't turning the peg more than a quarter turn at a time.

They were long scale strings on a standard Jazz. I got these cos I wanted a heavy gauge as I play with the E tuned down to D & wanted it to be still fairly tight.
Are long scale strings on a 22 fret bass a bad idea?

I also put them on first thing in the morning. They had just arrived by post.
The weather is fairly chilly here at the minute & maybe they were sitting in a cold warehouse overnight & I should have let them warm up a little before putting them on?

Anyway, the guys at Rotosound are cool about it & are sending me out a new one.
