Gauge of String to Fit Nut

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Gang,
I'm starting back into bass after 20 years off. I'm not too worried at this point about tone, so much as I'm worried about the gauge fitting the nut. I have a MIJ '87 Jazz. I've done a few searches, but haven't found an exact answer. Does anyone know what gauge will fit that nut, or is there a way to measure my strings?
TIA

You should be able to fit a "heavy" set of strings no problem. Meaning a set with a .110 E string.

Yes all sets up to heavy 50-110 will be fine. Also using strings smaller than the nut slots is no problem, as long as there is downforce at the nut and the slots are cut properly with a curved slot floor the strings will be firmly centred in the slot.
