I am freaking baffled at the wall of strings they have here. I have rotosounds right now and hate em. Too...thangy. I am going to hang out here all day. Please help me choose!

Personally, I like D'Addrios...both round wound and flat wounds, use both types...

DR or SIT. Depending on your bass, I'd go SIT if it's 34" scale.

God Bless, Ray

I've been trying DR lowriders and highbeams. I like them, but only have experience with a few other types.

If you're at GC, Dunlop or DR. Or if you don't need them today, go back home and order Dunlops from Strings and Beyond for $9 a set.

GHS Flea Signiture Boomers have always done right by me... $25 a pack and I get about 5-6 months from them.

I prefer the DRs in the color that best-suits my bass. They last a very very long time.

I have a deal with Curt Magan strings and have been happy with them. Earlier this year, Bruce Hall (REO Speedwagon) suggested that I try Dean Markley. I bought a set and like them too. The funny thing is that Curt Mangan used to work for Dean Markley and then started his own company.

All day at a GC, on a Saturday no less? Unless you are being paid to be there, I think you might need help in other areas, not just string choice!

+1

Guitar Center is an overpriced last minute option. I learned the hard way, could have bought 2 sets of D'Addario flatwound chromes online for the price I paid for 1 set at GC.

To the OP, if you don't love the twangy sound, do consider trying flatwounds. I'm a convert to flatwounds this year after 20+ years of playing punk/metal/rock and never considering them an option. I love their ballsy thumpy tone and the feel on my fingers.. and yes they still can do great edgy overdriven (80's Geddy Lee, Cliff Burton) sound with the right eq and pedal.

My guitar center started stocking DR sunbeams. I've not used another string since then. The perfect string in my opinion.

I make my GC price match a price I print out from the internet.

They usually sell Chromes for $35/set--I got them to match $20.99/set a while back.

I'd have to agree. Ernie Balls are great and decently priced too!

Ernie Balls die way too quick, IMO.

Try Elixirs! More expensive, but sound great and last long. They do feel more "slippery" due to the coating though. They really bring the growl out of my Warwick more so than Ernie Balls or D'addarios.

I've tried D'Addario, GHS, Ernie Ball and DR, and what I use now is the DR Hi Beams. You really can't go wrong with any of those options, honestly. Just try a set and see what you think if you like it keep getting it, if not try something else, the most you'll be out is 25 bucks or so, so it's not like you are taking a huge risk any way you go.
