there is nothing in the world i dislike the feel of more than fender strings. on my geddy, i use elixirs. on the squier fretless i just got, i strung it with flats before i even plugged it in.

Speculation only...but I would imagine Geddy uses Rotosound Swing 66 on his GLJazz basses, as far I remember he's been a 66 user forever, Fender would opt right away to put their own strings on it, as RSS66's would cost more money, and more work (receiving, paperwork, writing cheques to RS etc)

I would LOVE a GLJazz, and string it with 66's before even plugging it in...

I just might do that this year, as Geddy is one of my main inspirations as a musician as well as Keys/Bass/Voice

Question....are the fret markers painted on?

I'm in agreement with rkejeepin -- the block inlays are painted on.

I'm too lazy to do a search myself but I remember more than one thread discussing this, and one in particular in which Nino Valenti showed pics of an early Geddy neck that he cut open, revealing that it had real inlays, but also included later discussion about a source at Fender who said the newer Geddys have theirs painted on.

Assuming it's paint I'm still impressed.

I believe one older Bass Player magazine interview with Geddy
mentioned that he was using Dean Markley round wounds on
his 72 J-bass. I can't remember what set or the gauges but it
was Dean Markley's at the time.
Any hyper Geddy fans out there to give us up to date info?

Geddy has always used Rotosound Swing Bass standard gauge sets (105-80-65-45) for most of his recording career. During his Wal bass phase, he used Superwound (Rotosound) Funkmasters Piano String Design in a very light gauge (90-70-50-30). Prior to his roundwound days, I believe he used Labella flatwounds (Working Man was recorded with these). The guitarist, Alex Lifeson uses Dean Markley Blue Steel guitar strings (which are actually nickelplated steel). More info than anyone wanted probably!
