Just shot in the dark, but the only color coated string I've seen are DR's, probably completely off track though.

That's what I was thinking too, I just wasn't sure if they were LaBella since they have some black coated strings as well.

The bridge ends on these strings look nice, I'll have to check them out.

I read he used to string Rotosounds in the early days tuned down a half step and that he was recently was using DR High Beams but couldn't find any info about these.

Anyone used them before?

Nope, in Bass Player a few months back he mentioned that he's playing Lakland basses with DR Black Beauties.

I tried a set on an acoustic/electric guitar, and they absolutely sucked for some reason. Sounded like I was using flats, and on acoustic, that's the last thing I wanted.
