I'd really recommend watching the whole video cause this band is amazing, but check out 4:20 for what im talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FLZXEN4H1E

His P-bass really, really growls in this. I'm thinking.. is it because of the strings? Are they flats?

Yep...overdriven...possibly flats too...but the overdrive is the main factor.

Pups, eq, overdrive as main things giving great growl and crunch. Body woods that accent dark tone helps too. With strings adding a little or at least not subtracting from growl and crunch. Rotosound and GHS roundwound are my fave for not subtracting or adding more crunch and growl. Ernie ball roundwounds to add a touch more. Daddario to lesson crunch and growl a little bit.
