Really lovin' this tone! I know technique is most of it, but anyone know what strings he uses? I'm thinking I can work my way there.

Go to "Keep On Marching". About half way through...you can really hear it.

Maceo Parker Super Jam - Jam Cruise 9 - iClips.net

I can't get enough!

I think it was D'Addario XL. If you search for the interview I did here on TB, I had asked him.

well - It looks like he is using a Lakland in that video, and that's not the bass he discusses in the interview, so maybe his gear is different now including strings; although, if you go check out the Funky Meters set on that same site, he is using that same Lakland and has a ton of bite in his tone that sounds like well used rounds to me. The fact that he uses his thumb a lot has a lot to do with that "thumpier" flats-like tone.
