Getting the "Clank" out of new strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just installed DR DDT's on my ATK 5er, tuned to G# Standard. They sound alright, but it also sounds like a scrap metal pile. What can it be? It looks properly adjusted, there's no buzz really. Can I EQ that out?

Do you normally tune to G# standard? If so, what strings do you normally use?

I use DR DDT's...

E:55
B:75
F#:95
C#:115
G#:135

I cut the treble and it cured it marginally, the clank is still there and I have to re-EQ everything when I switch basses.

If the bass is set up so there are no physical reasons for clank then I think you'd have to adjust your technique. I don't know this, but it seems that because all strings are a little looser than normal would mean they are more likely to 'slap and clank' if you have an aggressive plucking style.

Try playing a little closer to the bridge and tame your finger strokes. Try a more 'parallel to the body stroke as opposed to a downward into the body stroke. Lighten up and let the volume knob do it's thing.

Are these strings less tension than the last set you had on the bass, or have any truss rod adjustments been made recently?.

I used to be the "get the board 100% flat" guy, and would always fight the clank, until dummy me realized that a quarter turn back on the truss rod can make all the difference in the world. I would try that and report back.

super low action, while feels nice, can choke and make strings clanky killing tone.

+1 on the truss rod. A small adjustment can make a huge difference. Also check your pickup height.
