Getting a punchy trebly tone with Flatwounds

Sign in to disble this ad
Well i just got some flatwounds on my aerodyne jazz and l love the feel of them. Problem is i play punk and they arent cutting it . I know i should of sticked with rounds but i wanted something different and they feel great with fingerstyle and i get less finger noise. So my question is how do i set up my amp with a 8 band equalizer to get a nice trebly punk tone.

Well maybe you can use EQ and compression to get some punch and treble...but that is probably like getting blood from a stone. I won't say that it "can't" be done though.

But I think you have to use roundwounds to get what you want.

Supposedly "halfrounds" or "groundwounds" are a compromise, but I have never personally played or seen them.

Nickel rounds are little smoother feeling than stainless, if that was what you were using before.

Turn the tone-knob of the bass open and boost anything from 3000 hertz on the EQ. And maybe play with a pick near the bridge.

Try GHS Brite Flats. I have them on all my solid bodies.

#I dont have any problems cutting through in my band. I play a P-Bass with flats. I keep the EQ completly flat...listen on my myspace page for sound-samples.

Do you play with a pic? That might work better.

I kinda have the same question, should i put my old set of chromes back on and mix with eq? It's on a P-bass.

I found Chromes to be fantastic with my rickenbacker but didn't like them on my P. they seem to be a lot brighter than regular flats. I think they'd sound pretty cool on a Jazz though. its a brighter sounding bass to begin with.

I can do it with my G&L Tribute L2500, which currently sports a set of Lakland Joe Osborn flats, but that thing has ridiculously high-output pickups and a trebly preamp. I'm also using an SWR SM-500, which isn't exactly treble-shy either.

Steve Harris gets a punchy, trebly tone with Rotosound heavy-gauge flats (.050-.110) and his fingers, but digs way the hell in and changes his strings frequently.
